Sutor shakes his head. The guy is full of questions. Where you coming from? Where you headed? Sutor desperately needs to take a leak. Fill ’er up, he tells the attendant. Asks for the john, goes to relieve himself.

The fuel comes to $37.80. Sutor gives the attendant a $100 bill. He goes to the office. Takes a long time. Returns, apologetic, he can’t make change for a hundred. Okay, keep it for next time. Ignoring the attendant’s protests, the pilot climbs back into the cockpit, revs up.

The blip on the radar screens that is the Beechcraft takes off, heading south.

In the cockpit, Sutor sees a Piper Commanche approaching from starboard. Sutor accelerates, but the Beechcraft lumbers along, burdened by the weight of its cargo. The Piper flies close enough for Sutor to see the U.S. Border Patrol shields on the plane. Closer. Signaling him to put down.

Police vehicles line the airstrip at Morgantown, West Virginia. FBI agents and sheriff’s deputies crouch behind their cars, guns drawn. Sutor lands the Beechcraft on the strip in front of them. The Border Patrol plane lands right behind.

SEIZED ARMS, SAID STOLEN FROM ARMORY

MORGANTOWN, W. VA.—Arms found on board the Beechcraft C-18, captured shortly after noon yesterday at the Morgantown Municipal Airport, have been definitely identified as part of those stolen from a Canton, Ohio, National Guard Armory.

The plane was captured yesterday by local State and County Police as it was being refueled here for a flight on to Florida and a rendezvous with Fidel Castro’s Cuban rebels. The pilot, Stuart Sutor, 34, seemed a bit disgusted at the time of his arrest. “I’ve flown all over the world,” he said, “and here I am caught by a bunch of hillbillies.”1
